In Memoriam: Daniel E. Greene, N.A. (1934-2020)

Daniel E. Greene, N.A. was one of America’s leading figure, portrait and still-life painters and

has been internationally acclaimed as one of the world’s most accomplished pastelists. His

portrait subjects have been leaders of Government, Banking, Education, Industry, Royalty and the Arts, and include Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt, Author Ayn Rand, Publisher William Randolph Hearst, Ambassador John Loeb Jr., Baroness Betsee Parker, Commentators Bryant Gumbel, Bob Schieffer and Composer Alan Menken. His works hang in more than 700 public and private collections throughout the world. Mr. Greene has taught at the Art Students League and The National Academy of Design in New York. Mr. Greene is the author of two definitive books, Pastel and The Art of Pastel which have been translated into nine languages and he has produced six instructional videos collected by artists world-wide. In 2017, a biography was published about Mr. Greene’s work titled “Daniel E. Greene, Studios and Subways, An American Master, His Life and Art.” He was the subject of Retrospective exhibitions at The Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, OH, the Mattatuck Museum in Waterbury, CT and the Museum of Art, DeLand, FL.


In 2019, Daniel E. Greene was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award with his wife Wende

Caporale at the Figurative Art Convention & Expo (F.A.C.E.) in Williamsburg, VA.

In 2001, the Portrait Society of America presented Mr. Greene with the Medal of Honor for his distinguished body of work. In 1999, he was awarded The Artists Fellowship Clinedinst medal for exceptional artistic merit. In 1995, the American Society of Portrait Artists honored Greene with the John Singer Sargent Award. In 1992, the Oil Painters of America Society named him to their Hall of Fame. In 1983, Mr. Greene was inducted into the Pastel Hall of Fame. Numerous articles about his art have appeared in The Artists Magazine, American Artist Magazine, International Artist Magazine, The World and I, Art News Magazine, Pastel Journal, Plein Air Magazine , New York Magazine, The New York Observer, The New York Times, American Art Collector, Disegnare & Dipingere (Italy) and Artistes Magazine(France).


It is with great sadness that Allied Artists of America says goodbye to Daniel Greene but it is with admiration and respect that we recognize his contributions to the arts and celebrate his life and his immense achievements.


His devoted wife, artist Wende Caporale is in our thoughts and prayers.
